In 2022, the world economic landscape contains unexpected colors. When the economy is gradually recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic, the political instability from the Russia-Ukraine conflict has led to the global energy crisis and tendency to increase interest rates continuously of Federal Reserve System (Fed). All the world's prestigious organizations are constantly changing their global growth forecasts in a negative direction.
Domestically, the high openness of the economy is clearly reflected in Vietnamese stock market. In 2022, VN-Index had three spectacular sublimation when surpassing 1,500 points, but very quickly followed by a deep decline of 32.2% – equivalent to the year of financial crisis in 2008. However, under the flexible management of the Government, Vietnam has steadily overcome the "back flow" of the global recession, achieving impressive results: GDP increased by 8.02% – the highest growth rate in the period 2011 – 2022; import-export turnover reached 700 billion USD for the first time; realized FDI is the highest in the past 5 years.

Entering to 2023, the economy is still a mystery with alternating bright and dark colors. Besides the challenges lasting from 2022, the economic picture of 2023 has positive highlights. Free trade agreements such as EVFTA, CPTPP, RCEP … will continue to be the driving force of the economy, creating strong growth momentum for import and export activities in the coming period, when global consumption recovers.
In 2023, with the development orientation, Gemadept will continue to focus on investing in expanding projects, while optimizing the efficiency of the port and logistics ecosystem.
In the Northern region, Nam Dinh Vu port is a strategic project of Gemadept. Located in a favorable position in the downstream area with deep-draft, Nam Dinh Vu is a container port capable of receiving the largest vessel size into Dinh Vu area up to 48,000 DWT. With a plan of 7 berths, a total length of up to 1.5 km and a total design capacity of 2 million TEUs/year, Nam Dinh Vu port will meet the growing demand of the Northern market in the coming period.
With the approval of the policy to transfer Nam Hai Dinh Vu port at the upper area, in 2023, the Company aims to put all its efforts to quickly fill up 100% of the capacity of phase 2 of Nam Dinh Vu port, which will be put into operation from the first quarter of 2023, and at the same time speed up the procedures to continue implementing phase 3 right this year. It is expected that, after the 3 phases of the project are put into operation, Nam Dinh Vu will bring a completely new look to the entire cluster of container ports in Dinh Vu, Hai Phong and become a busy container port with the largest capacity in the North.
One of the main driving forces and an impressive highlight in the development of Vietnam's seaport infrastructure system cannot fail to mention Gemalink Deep Sea Port located in Cai Mep – Thi Vai port cluster. The plan to open the world's largest shipping lane 250,000 DWT (full load) has been approved by the Ministry of Transport with a total investment of nearly 1,500 billion VND and Resolution 24 with specific decisions for Cai Mep port cluster just approved by the Politburo will be an important push to make Cai Mep – Thi Vai step by step become an influential gateway and international transshipment port in Asia and the world.
As a rare and unique seaport in the Cai Mep – Thi Vai port cluster, it possesses preeminent advantages in terms of piers and yards, modern equipment and technology, and a team of experienced and enthusiastic human resources. Gemalink phase 1 is expected to reach full capacity in 2023, creating momentum to start phase 2 this year. Accordingly, when phase 2 of the grand project is completed and partially operational from 2024, Gemalink will become the largest deep-sea port with a capacity of Vietnam, up to 3 million TEUs, contributing and having an important influence to the seaport industry of the country.
Constantly “Being Better” on “The Way Forward”, with its current position and capacity, Gemadept has been and continues its pioneering journey to create –a “Smarter and Greener” Port and Logistics ecosystem.
